The Video Game Music genre is the genre that encompasses any kind of sound or music played in the background while engaging in a video game. Usually, the music will start playing the second the game is started, and it fits the current theme of the game or event as well. For instance, opening a game will usually take you to the title screen, where you'll get a simple but lighthearted theme usually. Other cases, such as horror games, will use various tracks of ambiance to show the horror genre of the game.

Usually the song will be a short, repetitive track. In the instance of Super Mario Bros., the main theme song is about 37 seconds long before it loops. As newer games come out, songs start to increase in length, like with the song Dragon Roost Island from Legend of Zelda: Wind Waker, having a loop time of 1 minute and 21 seconds. Finally, Video Game Music makes the use of multiple genres and instruments within each song of a video game, making up a video game music genre while also removing the specificity of the genre.
